Summary

Nalini Singh returns to the world of the Guild Hunters for the most highly anticipated novel of the beloved series—a love story so epic it’s been half a millennia in the making…

Illium and Aodhan。 Aodhan and Illium。 For centuries they’ve been inseparable: the best of friends, closer than brothers, companions of the heart。 But that was before—before darkness befell Aodhan and shattered him, body, mind, and soul。 Now, at long last, Aodhan is healing, but his new-found strength and independence may come at a devastating cost—his relationship with Illium。

As they serve side by side in China, a territory yet marked by the evil of its former archangel, the secret it holds nightmarish beyond imagining, things come to an explosive decision point。 Illium and Aodhan must either walk away from the relationship that has defined them—or step forward into a future that promises a bond infinitely precious in the life of an immortal…but that demands a terrifying vulnerability from two badly bruised hearts。

This is Illium and Aodhan's story。 Through flashbacks we see key events in their 500 year long friendship from the time they met as baby angels to the current day in a Lijuan-ravaged China。 We finally get the story of what happened to Aodhan when he was captured and imprisoned for twenty-three months of torture and then took 200 years of seclusion to come to terms with it and rebuild himself。 We learn more about the hidden fractures in Illium too。Aodhan and Illium have been at odds for the past This is Illium and Aodhan's story。 Through flashbacks we see key events in their 500 year long friendship from the time they met as baby angels to the current day in a Lijuan-ravaged China。 We finally get the story of what happened to Aodhan when he was captured and imprisoned for twenty-three months of torture and then took 200 years of seclusion to come to terms with it and rebuild himself。 We learn more about the hidden fractures in Illium too。Aodhan and Illium have been at odds for the past year since the final defeat of Lijuan。 Illium's need to protect is coming into direct conflict with Aodhan's need to be independent and strong on his own。 Aodhan being seconded to Suyin - China's newly ascended archangel - threatens to make their quarrel and separation a permanent thing。 But Raphael isn't going to give up one of his Seven to Suyin without a fight。 He knows she wants to offer Aodhan the permanent position as her second since she asked him for permission to approach him。 Raphael's secret weapon is Illium who he sends to China to provide more help for Suyin。 He ceratinly hopes that will cause Illium and Aodhan to mend their differences and also bring them back to New York as parts of his Seven。Flashbacks show how the relationship between the two of them grew over their lives and forced proximity in the current time forces them to finally talk to each other but what each of them needs in a relationship。 While all of the Guild Hunter books have a central core of romance, this is the first in the series when the romance is between characters who have literally known each other all their lives。 It is a wonderful exploration of how love changes with time。 It was a lovely story。 。。。more

I’ve loved this series for awhile now and like many others I’ve been waiting for Illium and Aodahn’s story。 I thought this was a beautifully written slow burn friendship to the start of a romance story。 It’s also the book that helped me get over a very long reading slump❤️

Exactly what I needed。 The history of Bluebell and Sparkle, the lasting bonds that still have room to grow and strengthen。 There is so much happening in the world of Archangels and this little piece of love, friendship, loyalty, and hope was done to perfection。 I might write a full review after I read this a second (or third) time。

I LOVED this but tbh I wanted gay sex。 I had no idea about the M/M controversy (from some in the fanbase) before I read the arc 🤣 。 I am understandably disappointed but I get it

A great addition to the guild hunter series。 I loved discovering more about Aodhan's past and how he became who he is。 He has been one of my favorite characters ever since his introduction。 Discovering more of Illium's past was a treat as well。 Readers got a chance to look farther below the surface to who he really is, making him far more of a person than before。 One of my favorite parts of this book is that their friendship was repaired before anything else happened。 Although there were times w A great addition to the guild hunter series。 I loved discovering more about Aodhan's past and how he became who he is。 He has been one of my favorite characters ever since his introduction。 Discovering more of Illium's past was a treat as well。 Readers got a chance to look farther below the surface to who he really is, making him far more of a person than before。 One of my favorite parts of this book is that their friendship was repaired before anything else happened。 Although there were times when I wanted to reach through the pages and shake them both。 I do wish the mystery in the book had more answers。 The reveal was very interesting and I want to know more。 I also worry that this might be the last of books since this resolves all the relationships of the core characters。 I really hope there are more in this series coming。 。。。more

A beautiful story of the unwavering bond that defines two souls。I am hiding this in a spoiler so no one sees anything they didn't intend to。(view spoiler)[Illium and Aodhan have always been soulmates—-whether we are talking about their five centuries of devoted friendship or the wisps of a deeper bond long simmering between then。Meeting as toddlers and growing up together at the Rufuge created a bond stronger then brothers and while Illium and Aodhan are such polar opposites in personality, what A beautiful story of the unwavering bond that defines two souls。I am hiding this in a spoiler so no one sees anything they didn't intend to。(view spoiler)[Illium and Aodhan have always been soulmates—-whether we are talking about their five centuries of devoted friendship or the wisps of a deeper bond long simmering between then。Meeting as toddlers and growing up together at the Rufuge created a bond stronger then brothers and while Illium and Aodhan are such polar opposites in personality, what defines these men is their friendship and love for each other。When Aodhan went missing for almost two years, Illium was relentless in his search only eating and sleeping to keep up his strength to continue to find his friend; and when Aodhan was finally freed from his captors, Illium was always there to support and protect his friend。 Even while they were angry with each other for the past year, when Illium's hated father returned from his Sleep, Aodhan didn’t hesitate to fly to Illium's side to support his friend。And what has torn apart these men after five centuries of unwavering friendship?   After 200 years of hiding from the world, Aodhan was ready to step back into the life he was building before his kidnapping。  He was finally ready to face the world again but two centuries of being overprotective of his wounded friend has turned Illium into a helicopter parent always ready to step in between Aodhan and anything that would hurt him。   This newly reawakened Aodhan is suddenly feeling suffocated and tired of being treated like a broken doll and his angry outburst was a slap in the face to the man who would do anything to keep his friend safe。When an opportunity arose for Aodhan to step in as the Second to the new Archangel of  China,  not only was it an honor to be selected, it would give Aodhan a chance to step away from the protection of his friends and be an opportunity to stand on his own two feet for this first time in centuries。  He loves Raphael and being one of Raphael's seven, but being the Second to an Archangel will allow Aodhan a chance to show the world that he is once again a strong warrior。   But in order to shine in the spotlight, Aodhan needed to push Illium out of that protective stance he has taken up in front of him。In Archangel's Light, Raphael sends Illium  to China in support of Aodhan and his Archangel Suyin。 When Illium arrives in China, and he and Aodhan are forced to interact for the first time in months, they quickly realize that this fight has damaged their friendship in a way they never imagined could happen。  When danger arrives they can still fight as team, it is when the danger passes they don’t know how to just be with each other without being so angry or setting the other off。 Both of them are truly frightened that they have broken something precious, something which is so fundamentally important to them but neither can figure out how to make things right between them。   As they struggle to figure out what they can do to make things right, they both come to realize just how much they expected to have the other man in their lives forever and the possible loss of this bond is terrifying。  It is an innocent touch that sparks the idea that maybe their bond is destined for something more than just friends。While many fans are horrified and some are downright angry at this turn of events, as the story unfolds with chapters devoted to yesterday and today, we see exactly how their bond develops over the centuries and how their different personalities create this bond that hasn’t been overshadowed by any other in 500 years。 We see how these evolving feelings surprise even them。 But as Aodhan notes, "。。。angels are not like the majority of mortals。 Their kind lived far too long to see sexuality as an inflexible construct。"If you truly think about it, these two angels have shared a special bond throughout all fourteen books and reading Archangel’s Light we see how it was forged since childhood。 Aodhan and Illium。 Bluebell and Sparkle。 You know you love their friendship and we have all been as devastated by the distance that was growing between them as we were when Elena started to lose her wings。 There is really no other love that could (or should) come between them, especially in light of the shaky ground their friendship has been on in the last two books。 How could bringing in another romantic interest not drive a further wedge between our favorite angelic BFFs?  Would you expect them not to put a love interest before their best friend in terms of importance no matter how long or strong that friendship? So unless they the end up dating conjoined twin sisters, one of them would have been left out in the cold, cut off from the person who means the most to them, and that would have been devastating to see and destructive to the angel left behind。The shift in feelings takes both Illium and Aodhan by surprise but feels as natural and as comfortable as cuddling in a favorite blanket, both to them and to us, the readers。   Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes because there is nothing so wonderful as to watch the person who loves you no matter your flaws and faults finally realize those feeling of friendship are really much deeper and that the person you laugh with, cry with and turn to first  is truly your soulmate。  After reading Archangel's Light, you will see what I have seen, a pure love that was always destined to be。(hide spoiler)]Received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。See more and as except at EBookObsessed。com 。。。more

So it took me longer to pick this series up than it should have, which means I binge read all of them pretty quickly, which maybe influences my review。 I absolutely loved this book- it was completely unexpected, a little bit of a pivot, and I’m sure will make some readers angry。 I think it shows a lot of guys for Singh to to this direction, and speaks a lot to her being in a place where she can make characters into who she wants。 100% here for this, the series, and the new directions。 Grab this So it took me longer to pick this series up than it should have, which means I binge read all of them pretty quickly, which maybe influences my review。 I absolutely loved this book- it was completely unexpected, a little bit of a pivot, and I’m sure will make some readers angry。 I think it shows a lot of guys for Singh to to this direction, and speaks a lot to her being in a place where she can make characters into who she wants。 100% here for this, the series, and the new directions。 Grab this when you can! 。。。more

I cannot express how sad this book makes me。 I've been such a huge fan of this series since the beginning and it just breaks my heart。 And before someone calls me homophobic (since apparently having a different opinion equals to homophobia these days) for me the problem isn't that they are two men - it's the fact it is Aodhan and Illium。 I have always loved their friendship and brotherhood。 Always loved glimpses of their life growing up。 For me they are simply not a romantic pair。 If Nalini want I cannot express how sad this book makes me。 I've been such a huge fan of this series since the beginning and it just breaks my heart。 And before someone calls me homophobic (since apparently having a different opinion equals to homophobia these days) for me the problem isn't that they are two men - it's the fact it is Aodhan and Illium。 I have always loved their friendship and brotherhood。 Always loved glimpses of their life growing up。 For me they are simply not a romantic pair。 If Nalini wanted to write a story about two men she could have gone for Keir and his partner - I think most readers would be interested in his story。 Anyway for me this series is finished and I'll be saying goodbye to this author。 。。。more

Thank you so much to Berkely Romance and Netgalley for providing an e-arc copy of this。 All thoughts and opinions are still my own。I have been completely obsessed with this unique paranormal, urban romance series since I fell into it only a year ago。 And this newest release was the slow burn perfection I've been waiting for since book 1。 This edition to the Guild Hunter world is definitely less romance heavy and more about the emotional journey both Illium and Aodhan go through - both separately Thank you so much to Berkely Romance and Netgalley for providing an e-arc copy of this。 All thoughts and opinions are still my own。I have been completely obsessed with this unique paranormal, urban romance series since I fell into it only a year ago。 And this newest release was the slow burn perfection I've been waiting for since book 1。 This edition to the Guild Hunter world is definitely less romance heavy and more about the emotional journey both Illium and Aodhan go through - both separately and together。 I absolutely loved the way that Nalini Singh explored grief and it's impact of who you are not only alone, but who you are around others and those you love。 This had the slowest slow burn romance and I was 100% ready to burst by the time they got together。 There were so many long glances, brushes of the hand, and emotional outbursts that had my heart in my throat。 These characters are my absolute favorite of the series and this HEA was everything I wanted for them。 I know that there is 1 more book contracted for this series but I'm holding out hope for even more。 I don't think I'll ever be ready to let this world/series go。 Trigger warnings for torture, PTSD, depression, mental illness, grief, and (graphic) murder 。。。more

3。25 stars。 I love the Guild Hunter series。 And I love both Illium and Aodhan and had no problem with them falling further in love。 While there was a ton of love and them working out their issues, this felt very much like an interlude/middle of the series novel。 Likely Nalini is laying groundwork for future stories that will make this a stronger section of the overall narrative, but I wanted a little more than this。 Just a little more。 China is very much a mess。 And Lijuan is hopefully truly gon 3。25 stars。 I love the Guild Hunter series。 And I love both Illium and Aodhan and had no problem with them falling further in love。 While there was a ton of love and them working out their issues, this felt very much like an interlude/middle of the series novel。 Likely Nalini is laying groundwork for future stories that will make this a stronger section of the overall narrative, but I wanted a little more than this。 Just a little more。 China is very much a mess。 And Lijuan is hopefully truly gone for good。 。。。more

I refuse to give spoilers so that is as much as I'll say except it didn't detract from the story at all。Overall I can't suggest this book, series, or author enough。 I have never been disappointed and this book upholds that standard。 Thank you to Netgalley and Berkley for an eARC。 。。。more

A quintessential slow burn friends to lovers story is elevated to the sublime by Singh。 The beautiful unfurling of a deepening love between two emotionally wounded warrior angels is only heightened by the interspersed danger they face in a ravaged land and by the poignant glimpses of their childhood and traumas。 Illium and Aodhan's love may actually be greater, deeper, and more devoted than Raphael and Elena's - something I didn't think Singh could possibly pull off。 A quintessential slow burn friends to lovers story is elevated to the sublime by Singh。 The beautiful unfurling of a deepening love between two emotionally wounded warrior angels is only heightened by the interspersed danger they face in a ravaged land and by the poignant glimpses of their childhood and traumas。 Illium and Aodhan's love may actually be greater, deeper, and more devoted than Raphael and Elena's - something I didn't think Singh could possibly pull off。 。。。more

Illium and Aodhan。 Best friends, partners in mischief for centuries。 Aodhan kidnapping and recovery changed the rhythm of their relationship。 And his healing will change it again。 Aodhan has served as second to the new archangel of China, Suyin, for over a year and she offers him the position permanently。 Sent to China to assist Suyin, Illium and Aodhan are given the chance to rebuild, explore and strengthen their relationship。 All in a land that has been decimated and while helping those around Illium and Aodhan。 Best friends, partners in mischief for centuries。 Aodhan kidnapping and recovery changed the rhythm of their relationship。 And his healing will change it again。 Aodhan has served as second to the new archangel of China, Suyin, for over a year and she offers him the position permanently。 Sent to China to assist Suyin, Illium and Aodhan are given the chance to rebuild, explore and strengthen their relationship。 All in a land that has been decimated and while helping those around them rebuild too。 Why I started this book: I eagerly await all of Singh's releases and so I jumped at the chance of reading an ARC。Why I finished it: Trust in Singh was the only thing that brought me thru。 She's woven subtle hints of horror through out this love story, which is not my favorite。。。 but China on the road to recovery doesn't have a smooth path, and there are pockets of evil lingering from Lijuan。 Singh is a master of showcasing and explaining her characters' emotional arcs。 This book was a masterpiece in weaving the healing, loyalty and bravery necessary to jump from friends to lovers in addition to dealing with uncertainty and growing horror of newly discovered evil。 The book also jumps between "today" and "yesterday" as Singh guides the reader thru the steps and scenes that are the foundation of Illium and Aodhan relationship。 (view spoiler)[This book is all about the emotions of the relationship and stops with heavy kissing and a HEA。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Illium and Aodhan are two of my favorite characters, so it was absolutely lovely getting a book centered around them。 We get to see their past and present in this book。 And we last left them with a bump in their friendship。 As they reforge their relationship, it forges a little different。 It's a great friends to lovers story。 It's also urban fantasy, so just be aware the matter these two angels are investigating is very dark and a bit gruesome。I received this ARC by the publisher through Netgall Illium and Aodhan are two of my favorite characters, so it was absolutely lovely getting a book centered around them。 We get to see their past and present in this book。 And we last left them with a bump in their friendship。 As they reforge their relationship, it forges a little different。 It's a great friends to lovers story。 It's also urban fantasy, so just be aware the matter these two angels are investigating is very dark and a bit gruesome。I received this ARC by the publisher through Netgalley。 。。。more

Thank you to Berkley and Netgalley for sending me this earc! This is probably going to be one of the hardest reviews I’ve ever had to write。Everytime you have two characters who have an such history as Illium and Aodhan have, you know their story would be your favotire and I feel like all of us has been waiting for so long to see where it’s going to end。 So when the cover came out, my first reaction was “Oh, it’s gorgeous” but also “I really hope it doesn’t mean what i think it means”All throught Thank you to Berkley and Netgalley for sending me this earc! This is probably going to be one of the hardest reviews I’ve ever had to write。Everytime you have two characters who have an such history as Illium and Aodhan have, you know their story would be your favotire and I feel like all of us has been waiting for so long to see where it’s going to end。 So when the cover came out, my first reaction was “Oh, it’s gorgeous” but also “I really hope it doesn’t mean what i think it means”All throught the series, I loved these two so much because they have Friendship that we don’t get to see often enough in the book anymore。 Friendship that can survive anything。 And at the beginning of this book, somehow I still held out the hope that it won’t turn into a romance。Sadly it did。 You know how many times the word friends/friendship is mentioned in this book? 256。( Look it up) and the more we learned about both Illium’s and Aodhan’s past, which was one of my favorite part of this story, the more I thought: “ This should be a story of two friends, best friends, who spent their whole life together, leaning on each other at every point。 It’s time for them to find their own feet and see where standing on their own will take them”Not at any point of this book did I want either of them to find a romantic relationship! I wanted them to learn who they are after all this time。Illium, a boy who spent his whole life taking care of people: His Mother, Aodhan and basically everyone else。 Did I want him to go to China and get his best friend back? Absolutely。 Because I don't think he would be able to grow with that whole in him。 But I wanted an free Illium trying to figure out what we will do with all the power in him。 And Aodhan, a boy who went through hell and needed to find his way back to himself。 One of the parts I loved was when Aodhan realized that he was never on his own so, him going to China was a huge step。 And I wanted MORE of THAT。 You tell me that a year in the life of an angel is a minute。 Even for a young Angel, it’s still a very small period of time。 But you couldn’t give Aodhan more time? Forget for a second that I never thought of them as anything but soul brothers (yes, I am making that a thing) in the previous books, in this book the “romance” bullshit doesn’t come in until 90% into the story and in those 90% there was maybe one or two moments that felt a little more than friendly。 So yes, I am mad that we didn’t get a book these two deserve。 The book that all of the readers need to read。 A Book about FRIENDSHIP that can never be broken, no matter where the story takes them。 I felt like turning these friends into lovers kind of lowered their relationship didn’t raise it。 Don’t even get me started on the fact that Suyin was completely used as a backgroud for this story。 Did we suddenly forget that she’s a brand new archangel who needs to rebuild her last aunt completely destroyed????? She literally has the biggest job in front of her and all she was in this book is a step stool。 Overall, this book could have been everything but the last 10% just broke my heart。 。。。more
